Abdominoplasty

Abdominal Reduction

This is also called an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck. In this procedure excess skin and fat can be removed, abdominal contours and scars improved, and the muscles (rectus abdominus) tightened. This is a very good operation for reshaping the anterior abdominal wall post-pregnancy or after losing weight.

Post Pregnancy

Post-pregnancy as well as excess soft tissue, the muscles are stretched from the ribs to the pubic bone. These same mid-line muscles are also pulled apart in the middle (divarication). The full abdominoplasty tightens these muscles in the middle which gives a better shape to the waistline and overall.

The Procedure

The scar runs in the lower abdomen from hip to hip for the full abdominoplasty. There is also a scar around the umbilicus. There is also the option of a mini-abdominoplasty where the scar is more limited and the excess tissue is removed below the umbilicus. The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic involving a 1-night stay for the full abdominoplasty. Drains are usually placed in the area of the wound and may remain in place for a few days.

Swelling and Localised Numbness

Post Procedure

It is likely swelling and localised numbness may remain for a few months post-procedure. I recommend a support garment to be worn for 4 weeks after the operation. This is supplied to you in the theatre.

A more comprehensive list of the benefits, risks and limitations will be discussed with you at the consultation.
